I have been a member of Head Academy Kung Fu since November 2007. It has formed the backbone of my physical and mental fitness over the years. The physical training aspects of Head Academy should not be underrated. Nathan and team take a holistic approach to exercise. Whether that is traditional form training, pad work, sparring or modern self-defense aspects of Kung Fu. The fitness aspects of each class is magnified with the focus on body weight exercise to help strengthen muscles as a compliment to the cardiovascular nature of the traditional forms. I have studied several martial arts previously and Head Academy place great value in the applying traditional forms to real world scenario's. Every technique taught can be applied in a self-defense situation. There is no kiai masters or water benders to be found here 😉 Furthermore I attribute my training longevity and ability to recovery from injury and muscle soreness to techniques Nathan and team incorporate into the program at Head Academy. Techniques including stretching flows, foam rollers and importantly the correct way to use them ! Along with joint warm ups and injury management are part of a visionary and professional approach to martial Arts.

I appreciate everything about this school. My son trained here for 6 years and I have trained since 2016. The instructors are amazing with both kids and adults. They pay attention to their students strengths and weaknesses and teach accordingly. The instructors breadth of knowledge, not only about Kung Fu, but fitness, strength and conditioning make this an amazing place to train, for complete over all great physical and mental health.

The Head Academy Approach to Kung Fu for Adults

There are several facets to the Head Academy Kung Fu for adults.

The most obvious is perhaps adults Kung Fu lessons. Across our five locations, we have classes aimed at adults who want to combine improved movement, effective stress coping mechanisms, correct breathing techniques and flexibility with kick-ass self-defence.

Alongside our martial arts classes for adults to learn Kung Fu, Sifu Nathan Head has developed what he describes as ‘The Internal Way’. This is based on the teachings of Taoist Master Mantrak Chia combined with modern research into the connection of the energetic and physical systems of the human body. Through The Internal Way, you can go on a journey of emotional and physical self-mastery through a step-by-step system that will help you escape negative emotions to build a life of health and vitality through seated meditation and Qigong. All of this is based on Taoist philosophy, working to align oneself with the natural order of Nature and The Universe.

If adults Kung Fu is not for you, then we offer other ways of creating movement in your life – and this can be found through our other classes.

  • 5 Element Flow is a yoga-style class developed by Sifu Nathan Head, based on traditional Chinese medicine and Taoist Theory.
  • Kung Fu Cardio is based on realistic self-defence skills combined with movement.
  • Timeless Mobility: this is a great class to prevent injuries and niggles, and rehab existing problems.
  • Broken Boomers: the older generation needs some more gentle movement, so for our adults born between 1946 and 1964 (the Boomers), we have developed a range of classes suitable for their unique needs.

how are our adults kung fu classes structured?

All of our Adults Kung Fu classes are the result of 18 years of refinement. As we develop as martial artists and instructors, we develop new and improved methods of structuring our classes. As part of our ongoing dedication to improving our knowledge of health and fitness, we instructors are always educating and reeducating ourselves on the latest techniques and philosophies on effective and healthy training.
Our adults martial classes contain the time-tested methods of training Kung Fu, something that has been proven over hundreds of years. Traditional Kung Fu training works the health of an entire individual. From the energy systems of the body to the physical, mental and spiritual systems. With continued practice, an individual will experience health and fitness that is not found through any one training method.
On top of this time-tested method we add a variety of other important practices, from sets of full-body joint rotations to effective whole-body stretching flows and self-myofascial release techniques. 
 
In order to experience the benefits of just one Kung Fu class at our academies you would need to attend 3-4 different classes elsewhere to receive the same content and benefits. This purposeful and planned structure to our kung fu classes means that our students are benefiting from unparalleled tuition in the martial art of Jow Gar Kung Fu for self defence and health. It also means that our classes are achievable and challenging for all ages and skill levels. 
 
A recent comment from one of our new students probably sums it up best. “ I would have to attend a martial art class, a yoga class, and a few more just to do what we did in this class tonight.”
